Consumption has really bit us in the rear. Let there be no mistake, this consumption is encouraged by the government via their tax incentives for mortgage interest deductions. From what I recall all the studies indicate the credit encourages consumption, trading up to larger homes with bigger deductions, rather than having a significant impact on whether or not families decide to become home owners for the first time.
